Burgers at California Grill

December 31st, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under American, Food, Taiwan, Travels / Leave A Comment

By Jen’s suggestion, we all grabbed a bite at California Grill (加州燒烤堡). It felt like a California diner in there, or at least as close as it could feel in Taiwan. It turns out that the owner is from California. The burgers were not bad – better than other experiences I’ve had in Taiwan. The [...]

Haircut at Art of Hair

December 31st, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under Taiwan, Travels / 1 Comment

Karen and I both got haircuts at Art of Hair – that’s where Albert gets his haircuts. Tony took all the pictures while Albert did all the translating for me. The stylist asked if I wanted Taiwanese style or American style. Taiwanese, of course! If I wanted American I would get one in America. Anyway, [...]

December 31st, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under Chinese, Food, Taiwan, Travels / Leave A Comment

Three of us shared a quick meal at Wang Kang Dan Bao Fan Zhuan Mai Dian (旺康蛋包飯專賣店)  in the SOGO food court since I had already eaten and we were in a hurry. We had a chicken steak with tomato rice omelette. Another cheap and delicious meal in a food court, only in Asia!

Lunch at Ji Long Miao Kou in Living Mall

December 31st, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under Chinese, Food, Taiwan, Travels / Leave A Comment

My first meal after landing in Taiwan was at the food court in the New Living Mall (京華城). I had a combo meal at 基隆廟口 which had: a pork cutlet (排骨) that came with knife-cut noodle soup, a side of vegetables, tofu, and some stewed pork rice (魯肉飯). All this costed NT$140, which is America [...]

Lunch at Gio’s

December 29th, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under American, Food / Leave A Comment

I just had another birthday lunch, this time at Gio’s with Lina. (Thanks Lina!) Gio’s is a pretty old school joint that youngins like myself usually wouldn’t think about dining at. We had the meatball hero sandwich, which had four meatballs topped with cheese and marinara, placed between a soft and crunchy roll. We also [...]

While in Taiwan this past September, we heard David Tao’s new song at the time, 暗戀 (Adoration), and we all fell in love with it. I just went karaokeing and sang the song for the first time, and now I’m hooked all over again. 01. 願主憐憫 Kyrie Eleison 02. 亂七∞糟 A Big Mess 03. 暗戀 [...]

Raw Food at Bar Crudo – Happy Hour Before 6:30

December 29th, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under American, Food / Leave A Comment

Linda took me to Bar Crudo for my birthday. Another excellent meal. We got there early and it happened to be happy hour. $1 oysters and $5 cup of seafood chowder. We agreed that their Seafood Chowder is possibly the best we’ve ever had. It had bits of fish, mussels, shrimp, squid, potatoes, and applewood [...]

Ginger Scone at Sandbox Bakery

December 29th, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under Bakery, Food / Leave A Comment

I’m still hooked on Sandbox Bakery. I went again for breakfast this morning because I wanted to take my mom there. This time I grabbed a ginger scone and an almond croissant. (I always eat two things.) Their croissant is just how everyone describes it – soft and flaky – one of the best. I’m [...]

Chestnut Cake at Italian Tomato in Mitsuwa Marketplace

December 28th, 2009 by Jonas / Filed under Bakery, Food, Los Angeles County, Travels / Leave A Comment

I have a weakness for Japanese cakes so I had to try something at Italian Tomato in the Mitsuwa Marketplace. I tried their chestnut cake and it was not bad. Looking at the display case, I wasn’t expecting to be blown away anyway, though, because they just didn’t seem as fresh as the cakes I [...]
