Blue Bottle Coffee: Liege Waffle
caramelized Belgian style Liege waffle
hot out of the waffle iron in a few minutes
Everyone from the west coast to the east coast to the far east (Tokyo) knows about Blue Bottle Coffee but not everyone knows about their Liege waffles. The way I see it is you can either wait an hour to get seated at a restaurant and order a fresh-made Liege waffle topped with fruits and syrups and a mountain of whipped cream that will take another 15-20 minutes to come out and then pay $15, or you can go to Blue Bottle Coffee and pay less than $5. The waffles are simple: served fresh hot, just slightly caramelized so it’s not too sweet, and not too light but not too heavy so it’s filling but doesn’t sit in your stomach for the rest of the day. The cafes themselves are usually white, modern and clean yet the vibe is no-frills and not pretentious – just order at the counter and grab a seat or take your coffee and waffle to go. I personally go to the Sansome SF Fidi location; there’s usually a long queue so I go during late mornings to avoid the rush hour. The Ferry Building location serves the same waffle.
