Buko (Young Coconut) Pie at Nathaniel’s Bakeshop in the Philippines

Friends and family always travel abroad and ask me what I’d like as a souvenir. Obviously I want food, but what can other places offer that I can’t already get in San Francisco? When it comes to the Philippines, I want buko pie. Dried mangos, pastillas, polvoron, Choconut, Goldilocks, Red Ribbon, Magnolia – I can get them all here already – but buko pie here is just not the same. Places here tend to add too much custard. I want the good stuff – more coconut meat! Better yet, all coconut meat! There are a few very popular and well-known places that specializes in buko pie in the Philippines. While Nathaniel’s Bakeshop isn’t known for theirs (they’re more known for their buko pandan) they still preserved well over the flight back to SF.
