Salt & Straw: Bone Marrow and Smoked Cherries Ice Cream

Double, split scoop:
Roasted Strawberry Coconut, Bone Marrow and Smoked Cherries Ice Cream, Honey Lavender, and Sea Salt Ribbon (not visible)

2017 seems to be the year of ice cream in San Francisco with a number of new shops having just opened. I’m honestly not a fan of most of them since I prefer my ice cream either old-fashioned like Mitchell’s or artisanal like Bi-Rite, not the third category: do it for the gram. Salt & Straw from Portland falls in the artisanal category and I nominate their bone marrow and smoked cherries ice cream as the most interesting and unique ice cream flavor of the year. It’s ice cream but it’s also savory so it’s not too sweet. It’s not for everyone, but if you’re the daring type and you don’t like your sweets too sweet, then it’s probably for you. I’ll still always be a fan of their honey lavender and their sea salt with caramel ribbons, though. Tip: For the best bang for the buck, get the double ($7) with split scoop (+$0.50) so you can have four flavors.
